Book Description

"More than 55 million Americans have experienced chronic pain lasting more than three years, and even more will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. In this book, Mitchell Yass shows that such pain is the result not of physical injuries such as herniated discs or arthritis, but of muscular imbalance and weakness. He clearly and simply demonstrates how most people can eliminate pain through strength training." Using the program he has developed in his fifteen years as a physical therapist, Mitchell Yass provides a comprehensive program with illustrations and detailed instructions to help readers return to full functioning capacity. Overpower Pain also describes how muscles function, how they can cause pain, and what specific exercises can be done to relieve pain in every part of the body.

Book Review

This book has a lot of great information in it.  Mitchell Yass has provided not only exercises that will help to alleviate aches and pains, but he explains why these exercises work.

First he takes you through the mechanics of pain itself.  Then he talks about pain in specific areas of the body.  For instance, most people who have lower back pain have weak thigh and abdomen muscles.  So they are not getting the right support that their body needs to ensure proper alignment in the lower back.  By focusing their exercises on the thigh and abdominal muscles, they will alleviate the strain on the back.

Once he explains the ins and outs of why this works, he provides you with details on how to perform the exercises.  Unfortunately, many of the exercises require either a gym membership or having weight equipment in your home.  It would have been nice to have seen him provide alternatives for those who can not afford an expensive gym membership or don’t have the space for a weight bench and other various equipment.
