Not Your Crush's Cauldron by April Asher

Image
Not Your Crush's Cauldron Book 3 of Supernatural Singles by April Asher narrated by Zura Johnson This is the 3rd book in the series and I hadn't read any of the prior books.  This did not affect my ability to follow along with the story.  In fact, I absolutely loved this story.  As soon as I was done listening, I bought the first 2 books.  I can't wait to listen to those!! Zura Johnson creates voices for the characters that fit their personality and has great intonation.  I do tend to listen to my books at 1.5X speed and the pacing at that rate was great.  This is the first book that I have listened to that she has narrated.  I plan to keep an ear out for more of her books.   The series follows triplet witches as they try to discover their true selves as well as their one true love.  In Not Your Crush's Cauldron, we get to know Olive (the 3rd born of the triplets) much more.  She is a reserved, down-to-Earth professor that teaches supernatural studies.  She has a normal

Supernatural Serial Killers

Image
Description Albert Fish held the genuine belief that the murders he committed were upon instruction from God. Peter Stumpp, who started practicing the "wicked arts from twelve years of age", was convinced he was a werewolf. There are many more murderous individuals like them. Supernatural Serial Killers explores the association between serial killers and the supernatural. The crimes committed by these men and women usually involved sexual deviance, cannibalism and violence toward children. In sixteenth century Europe, the problem became so significant that 'Werewolf Witch Trials' were conducted - many have no idea that it was possible to be tried and convicted for the crime of being a Werewolf, but Lycanthropy was a serious and major social concern in the 1500s. In this book, approximately twenty supernatural serial killers are discussed, including their background, crimes, trials and defenses. The Tears of Isis

Image
Description NOMINATED FOR THE BRAM STOKER AWARD FOR SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN A FICTION COLLECTION What do Medusa and the goddess Isis have in common? Are both creatresses through destruction? And why was Isis oftentimes depicted as weeping? Herewith are some answers as parts of a journey through art and creation, of sculpture and blood-drinking, crafting musical instruments from bone, revisiting legends of Cinderella and the Golden Fleece, of Sleeping Beauty and Dragons and Snow White-some of these, of course, well disguised. For is not art both the recasting of what is, as well as the invention of what is not? The Elizabethan poet Sir Philip Sidney spoke of art as "making things either better than nature bringeth forth, or, quite anew, forms such as never were in nature," so here there be vampires, and ghouls, and insects perhaps from outer space as well as from this Earth, and visions of Saturn and life in the sea, and other wonders "such as never were in natu

Earth Blessings

Image
Description We can see from the floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and pollution disasters that our earth is disturbed. Not to mention the political upheaval that blights the planet. However, the Earth herself has given us tools that assist in stabilizing the situation and which teach us how to turn our thoughts and actions towards positive healing for the planet rather than envisaging her destruction. Crystals offer us creative solutions. Some amazing high-vibration crystals have made themselves known at this time to assist with Earth healing and with personal consciousness-raising. Other Earth healing crystals have been around for millennia but still do a sterling job of restoring the environment and the earth beneath our feet to optimum energetic functioning.   Review As both a spiritual teacher and an energetic healer, I was really intrigued by this book.  I have always been interested in crystals, but felt intimidated by all the information out there.  It

Lost in Translation

Image
Description An artistic collection of more than 50 drawings featuring unique, funny, and poignant foreign words that have no direct translation into English. Did you know that the Japanese language has a word to express the way sunlight filters through the leaves of trees? Or that there's a Finnish word for the distance a reindeer can travel before needing to rest?  Lost in Translation brings to life more than fifty words that don't have direct English translations with charming illustrations of their tender, poignant, and humorous definitions. Often these words provide insight into the cultures they come from, such as the Brazilian Portuguese word for running your fingers through a lover's hair, the Italian word for being moved to tears by a story, or the Swedish word for a third cup of coffee. In this clever and beautifully rendered exploration of the subtleties of communication, you'll find new ways to express yourself while getting lost in the

Rose Harbor in Bloom

Image
I received this book free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.  I did not receive any form of compensation in return. First, I would like to say that I have been a HUGE Debbie Macomber fan for many, many years.  If I remember correctly, one of the first books I had read by her was one in where the main character's aunts sent her on a trip to Alaska to be a mail order bride.  Of course, she had no idea that was the reason they sent her on the trip. Any fan of Debbie Macomber knows all about her Cedar Cove series.  Well, the Rose Harbor series is a spin off from Cedar Cove.  It has many of the characters that we have come to know and love and a whole new cast of characters. Like any of Debbie's books, I could not put this one down.  It was so awesome catching up with some of the friends from Cedar Cove (even if it was only quick glimpses at them).  I absolutely love the new inn that is being featured.  I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book.  Hopef

Maisy at the Beach

Image
Book Description   Maisy and company have a full day of fun in Maisy at the Beach, collecting shells, building a sandcastle, and feasting on tasty snacks. Young readers join in the fun as they complete the scenes with more than 25 full-color, reusable stickers. Book Review   Truly an adorable book that kept the kids engrossed.  It is a great early reader book that is interactive.  As the story progresses it asks the child to put stickers in certain parts to complete the pictures.  What’s great is that the pages allow for the stickers to be put on and taken off repeatedly.  I am sure that eventually the adhesive on the back will start to wear off after while.  Maisy at the Beach: A Sticker Book (9780763659080): Lucy Cousins: Books ISBN : 0763659088 ISBN-13 : 9780763659080

Image
Book Description   Parenting is hard. That's what Edward Rosenberg has always assumed, although his only experience with children has been as the drunken uncle. Now the love of his life, Sam DaCosta, is yearning for fatherhood. Edward's been sober for years. He and Sam are in a good place. Why rock the boat? But somewhere between stealing his cash and alienating Sam, Ginger manages to wind herself into Edward's heart. Can the three of them create a family? Or will Ginger blow them all apart? Book Review   This is one of those books that really changes how you view life.  Poor little Ginger lived through absolute hell.  And of course, she doesn’t know how to cope with what she has been through.  So she did the typical kid thing and acted out.  Of course, th

A Leprechaun’s Lament

Image
Book Description   A stipulation of the Patriot Act gave Chief Sam Jenkins an easy job; investigate all the civilians working for the Prospect Police Department. But what looked like a routine chore to the gritty ex-New York detective, turned into a nightmare. Preliminary inquiries reveal a middle-aged employee didn’t exist prior to 1975. Murray McGuire spent the second half of his life repairing office equipment for the small city of Prospect, Tennessee, but the police can’t find a trace of the first half. After uncovering nothing but dead ends during the background investigation and frustrations running at flood level, Jenkins finds his subject lying face down in a Smoky Mountain creek bed—murdered assassination-style. By calling in favors from old friends and new acquaintances, the chief enlists help from a local FBI agent, a deputy director of the CIA, British intelligence services, and the Irish Garda to learn the man’s real identity and uncover the trail of an interna

Aaron & Keja: Time Dragon

Image
Book Description   Lord Ky'debaul has found his magic powers waning. He devises a plan to restore them by killing a silver dragon. This dragon is not just a silver dragon, it is a time dragon. But in order for him to do this, he must send the dragon to another world where there are no laws written against killing a Time Dragon. The world he happens by chance to send the dragon to is Aaron Gillian's world. Book Review   This should have been a quick read considering the length of it.  However, one of the things that kept tripping me up was the lack of finesse when it comes to writing.  The author’s ideas were great.  She knew where her plot was going and how she wanted to get there.  However, I don’t feel that she has the knowledge yet to be able to get her from point A to point B and take the reader along with her. I am sure if she has the opportunity to work with someone skilled in writing, they could help to guide her along the path to help culminate her ideas
