Chasing Faeries

Image
Book Description   Through the tiny golden door that opens somewhere in childhood, enter a place called Appletwist Garden... Calla Rose has always believed in faeries. Lying in her bed she would listen for hours to her grandmother's wonderful tales of faeries that lived in an enchanting land somewhere through the nearby wishing well. Now in her tenth year, Calla Rose begins to realize that maybe there is more to the stories than she thought. When unexpected visitors pop up in her grandmother's garden, a choice must be made that could change her life forever. Book Review   This was such a delightful story.  The characters were all sweet and the story was purely divine.  Even though it is geared toward a much more younger read, anyone would be caught up in the tale of ten year old Calla Rose and her search for the faeries.  The descriptions used in this book make you feel like you can truly see the faeries alongside of Calla Rose.  You can also feel her exaspe

Jilly-Bean

Book Description   Temperatures are rising and superstition reigns supreme! Eighteen year old Jillian Crossland has her life planned out. Or so she thinks! Despite her better judgement, a séance one evening sets a blueprint for disaster when fate steps in and shakes up her plans and her life! Jilly-Bean is a novel that explores contemporary life in the throes of global warming and on the edge of madness. Book Review   This story was very much character driven.  The plot was slow to start and was very convoluted in many places.  However, the characters were well thought out and very well rounded. I had problems trying to stay focused on reading.  There were many times when the story became too overly descriptive and my mind would end up wandering elsewhere.  It was a nice story.  However, it never really drew me into it.   It just felt like it was going nowhere.   Jilly-Bean (Jilly-Bean Series # 1): Celia Vogel: Kindle Store ASIN : B007UP2VD2 In conjunction w

Staying Human

Image
Book Description   This is the story of your past, your present, and if all goes well...your future. My name is Jack; I've lived for the past 500 years without knowledge of what or who I am, and now that I'm slowly finding out... it's not looking good. There is someone... or something... that is guiding us to the brink of destruction and I seem to be the only one that knows about it. Book Review   This book had a lot of promise.  The plot was well thought out.  The characters were pretty well rounded.  The problem lies in the actual writing of the story.  This was given to me by the author as a finished product, not an ARC.  So one would think that it would be a much more polished work.  However, it was fraught with misspellings, verb tense issues, and much more. One of the biggest issues that I had witnessed was the fact that the author has trouble staying in the same point of view throughout the story.  It seems that he had every intention of writing the b

Older teens and adults die within hours of exposure. On a small island off the coast of Maine, Abby must help her brother and baby sister survive in this new world, but all the while she has a ticking time bomb inside of her -- adolescence. Book Review   At first, I was dismayed to see that this book was written with such sparse details.  However, after I really started getting into it, I realized that the sparse details were in direct correlation

Spinning The Law

Image
Book Description   A behind-the-scenes analysis of media strategies not taught in law school or journalism classes, this collection of entertaining examples and explanations make for ideal reading for everyone fascinated by celebrity legal problems. Book Review   I hate to say this, but I did have a bit of trouble getting through this one.  Yes, it was interesting, but I felt that it did get bogged down in places. This book did address the problem with media oversaturation.  How can anyone have a fair trial when the media has already convicted them in the headlines?  Too many times we walk into the court room to sit on juries with opinions already formed because of what we see on TV.  This book gives many examples of this. Book Review   This was a completely cute book to read.  The kids enjoyed every minute of it.  They were laughing hysterically throughout. Sands Hetheringto

Thawed Out & Fed Up

Book Description   Sam Bonham—bad husband, deadbeat dad, and possible criminal on the run from the law—wanders out of modern-day East Texas into an ersatz Wild West boomtown created for a movie that never happened.  And when Sam strikes a blow against the gangsters who’ve been terrorizing the town, the locals look to him to save them. He’s no hero, but he’s stumbled upon someone who is: John Wayne. But the John Wayne of this story is not the stalwart lawman of Hollywood films—he’s a seventy-two-year-old man who had himself cryogenically frozen.  He’s weak, bald, frail…and unrecognizable to everyone but Sam. In The Duke’s “defrosted” state, he’s not entirely himself.  In fact, he believes he’s actually Ethan Edwards, the character he played in The Searchers , one of Wayne’s most beloved films. Ethan or Duke or Marion Morrison, at his side Sam learns how to be a man, and a hero—and a pretty good shot! As he takes on the Old West gang of thugs, he finds that he might have beco

Eden

Image
Book Description   Seemingly overnight the world transforms into a barren wasteland ravaged by plague and overrun by hordes of flesh-eating zombies. A small band of desperate men and women stand their ground in a fortified compound in what had been Queens, New York. They've named their sanctuary Eden. Harris--the unusual honest man in this dead world--races against time to solve a murder while maintaining his own humanity. Because the danger posed by the dead and diseased mass clawing at Eden's walls pales in comparison to the deceit and treachery Harris faces within. Book Review   This book was so wildly disturbing to the imagination that it had me sleeping with the lights on!  First off, this was one of those books that is told from multiple perspectives.  Once you figure that out, it flows along nicely.  At first it was a little disconcerting, but I caught on pretty quickly. There wasn’t too much character development involved for the secondary characters.
