Review–Olive Oil Desserts

OOD-cover-high

Book Description

Those yearning to create more healthy treats will learn how to bake without the fats and hydrogenated oils found in common dessert recipes with this lavishly illustrated cookbook. Designed specifically for baking with olive oil, the recipes eliminate key ingredients—butter, hydrogenated oils, margarine, and shortening—that are staples in many traditional desserts. In addition to household favorites such as toll cookies, brownies, and apple pie, the cookbook features instructions for making more than 60 mouth-watering treats, among them chocolate chip buttermilk cake, silky cheesecake with strawberries, lemon sugar cookies, pecan coconut bars, and apple cinnamon rolls. Hints such as using egg substitutes and other ingredients to further lower cholesterol intake, substituting lactose-free options for those suffering from milk sensitivities, and a guide to the many varieties of olive oil are also included.

Book Review

Micki Sannar has created a wonderful cookbook filled with yummy recipes that are all made with olive oil.  The reason she uses olive oil instead of regular oil or butter is that olive oil is much healthier for you.  So if your doctor told you to watch your cholesterol this is the cookbook for you.

In the beginning of the book, Micki lists all the health benefits from using olive oil which include decreasing cholesterol, reducing inflammation, and reducing your risk of cancer.

Then Micki goes on to explain the differences between the different types of olive oil.  I know that most chefs on TV say that you should only use extra virgin olive oil.  But it is always nice to know what each one is and why it is better.

Sprinkled throughout the book are mouth watering pictures of some of the recipes.  Plus there are funny anecdotes thrown in as well.  I love the story about how her husband would plan surprises for her birthday that always included German chocolate cake.  She never let on (until now) that she never liked German chocolate cake.  She does include his recipe in the book though.

The Extreme Lemon Sugar Cookies that we baked turned out fabulous.  They were so full of flavor.  It was hard to not sit and eat them all at once.

The great thing about this book is that even if you are a novice baker, she details everything in such a way that you can easily follow the recipes.

This book is definitely a must have for every kitchen!
