Dead Things Are Closer Than They Appear by Robin Wasley

Image
Dead Things Are Closer Than They Appear by Robin Wasley narrated by Eunice Wong Can I start by saying "WOW"?  The audiobook is a little over 12 hours long, but I finished it in one day.  I did not want to stop listening at all.  Robin Wasley sped out of the gate with her first book, a great combo fantasy/horror book.   First up, the narration.  Eunice Wong was incredible.  Her voicing of the story kept me on the edge of my seat.  There was depth to her characters as well as range in her intonation of the actual story.  When characters were whispering, she did too.  If the characters were anxious, you could feel it in her voice.  I will definitely be looking for more books narrated by Eunice! The story starts off describing the sleepy little town where tourists visit to see where the magic used to happen.  However, the fault lines were sealed off ages ago and the magic is no longer accessible.  There is one caveat to that though.  There are guardians who hold keys to unlock th

Remedial Magic by Melissa Marr

Image
Remedial Magic by Melissa Marr narrated by Jeremy Carlisle Parker & Max Meyers There are 2 narrators for this audiobook.  Jeremy Carlisle Parker is a woman who is a trained opera singer.  I have heard and enjoyed her narration before in The Witches of Thistle Grove series by Lana Harper.  Max Meyers who has acted in Off-Broadway productions.  I have not listened to any of their previous work.  I think that both narrators did the best job that they could in order to portray so many different POVs in one audiobook.  However, this book would have benefited better from a much larger cast of narrators in order to help differentiate.  Anyone who has read my previous reviews will know that I rarely DNF a book.  Even if there are points about the book that I don't like, I will generally try to stay until the end in order to give the author a chance of redemption.  However, I just could not continue listening to this book.  I really did try, but I couldn't. Now the blurb that I read

Aaron & Keja: Time Dragon

Image
Book Description   Lord Ky'debaul has found his magic powers waning. He devises a plan to restore them by killing a silver dragon. This dragon is not just a silver dragon, it is a time dragon. But in order for him to do this, he must send the dragon to another world where there are no laws written against killing a Time Dragon. The world he happens by chance to send the dragon to is Aaron Gillian's world. Book Review   This should have been a quick read considering the length of it.  However, one of the things that kept tripping me up was the lack of finesse when it comes to writing.  The author’s ideas were great.  She knew where her plot was going and how she wanted to get there.  However, I don’t feel that she has the knowledge yet to be able to get her from point A to point B and take the reader along with her. I am sure if she has the opportunity to work with someone skilled in writing, they could help to guide her along the path to help culminate her ideas

Chasing Faeries

Image
Book Description   Through the tiny golden door that opens somewhere in childhood, enter a place called Appletwist Garden... Calla Rose has always believed in faeries. Lying in her bed she would listen for hours to her grandmother's wonderful tales of faeries that lived in an enchanting land somewhere through the nearby wishing well. Now in her tenth year, Calla Rose begins to realize that maybe there is more to the stories than she thought. When unexpected visitors pop up in her grandmother's garden, a choice must be made that could change her life forever. Book Review   This was such a delightful story.  The characters were all sweet and the story was purely divine.  Even though it is geared toward a much more younger read, anyone would be caught up in the tale of ten year old Calla Rose and her search for the faeries.  The descriptions used in this book make you feel like you can truly see the faeries alongside of Calla Rose.  You can also feel her exaspe

Book Review   First off, let me start by saying that this book is not for the feint of heart.  If you do not like macabre stories, then you will want to steer clear of this one. On that note, I loved this book.  It has been ages since I have read a good horror/fantasy book.  This one is definitely that.  It will take you to places that you wish you didn’t go.  It will cause you to squirm with uneasiness.  It will make you want to lock your doors tigh

The Genie Ignites

Image
Book Description   Girl meets genie. They fall in love. Girl gets killed. Genie gets cursed. She has no recollection of how she once felt about a nearly 4,000-year-old genie named Zubis who suddenly invades her world, but he certainly remembers her. In a previous incarnation, Bethany was an important temple priestess who apprenticed to the djinn. Zubis, powerful and alluring, is infuriatingly bemused by Bethany’s skepticism. Once upon a time, he vowed to love her forever and has no plans of breaking his vow. And although the priestess she once was had been taught that a romance with a djinni must never be, Bethany gradually realizes that her love for Zubis cannot be forgotten. Along with the returning glimmers of her past

The Shadows of Arthur’s Kingdoms

Image
Book Description   The Shadows of Arthur’s Kingdom is an epic fantasy about a wanna-be Royal Knight of King Arthur’s Round Table, fire-breathing dragons, a dangerous quest, castles, and a self-willed, curious princess.  Readers young and old will enjoy this heartwarming story. Book Review   As you can see by the description, the back cover of the book does not provide much to go on for what this book is about. Supposedly this book was written by a twelve year old child.  It doesn’t have the feel that a child created it.  According to the information provided me, the mother only helped by doing some editing to it.  I think that she did much more then just editing.  Now if they had just come out and said to begin with that the mother wrote it based off of an idea that the child had, then that would be different.  But to attempt to pass this off as having been written by the child is just a little too much.
