Review–The History of Florida

Disclaimer: I received this book free from University Press of Florida in exchange for an honest review. I did not receive any form of compensation.

You would think that since I was born and raised in Florida, that I would have learned much of what is presented in this book.  Unfortunately, my education seems to have been lacking.  There were many stories and events that I had never heard about prior to reading this book.

This book started out when the University of Florida had asked 23 historians to collaborate on a project about the history of Florida.  The original book was published in 1996.  The book has since had information added to it.

Did you know that 2013 is the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon finding the Fountain of Youth in Florida?  I remember visiting there on a school field trip.  However, I hadn’t heard anything of this anniversary at all this year.  You would think that this would have been big news since it is the 500th anniversary.  Maybe it was only mentioned in the areas surrounding the Fountain of Youth.

Each chapter is written by different authors and covers various point in time.  However, there are a few chapters that don’t follow this pattern.  Instead of focusing on a period of time, they focus on a group of people such as the Seminoles.  This allows you to learn about the history of the group as a whole instead of getting it piece by piece throughout the book.
