Comfortably Awkward

Book Description   For Albert Ferenzo, life is a series of ironic events that may or may not have a reason behind them. While struggling to find a niche for himself, Albert blames the corporate world for hindering his dream of making money and living a prosperous life. After playing the good guy his entire life, Albert decides that the only way to get ahead in the world is to be the bad guy. Albert questions his own fate as he drives himself to insanity in an effort to find happiness. The destinies of Albert and everyone around him intertwine as he finally realizes what life is all about or at least, he thinks he does in this revolt against normality. Book Review   We all know what its like to be the good guy.  You feel like everyone around you steps all over you like a worn out welcome mat.  Well, Albert Ferenzo has decided to change all that.  He is sick and tired of being used and abused.  So he decides to take fate into his own hands and stop being Mr. Nice Guy. Live Below The Line

Image
One of the things that I have recently learned about is an upcoming awareness campaign called Live Below The Line .  This campaign is trying to help raise awareness about the extreme poverty that many people world wide live in.  Did you know that over 1.4 BILLION (yes you read that right! that says billion) people only get about $1.50 worth of food and drink per DAY!  Most Americans eat more then that in snack food alone per day.  So the challenge is to attempt to live for 5 days with only eating or drinking $1.50 worth of food and drink per day.  They are also asking to help raise money for the charities that they are partnered with.  For the US, those charities are Shot@Life , Unicef , Care , The Global Poverty Project , Global Syndicate , Malaria No More , and Rainforest Foundation US . As a review blogger, I get forwarded marketing campaigns through BzzAgent a lot.  It is usually for various products.  However, this one I felt was a very good social concerns cause that everyo

Book Description   Dyscrasia plagues the insectan elders of the Underworld. Desperate to save them from extinction, the golem Doctor Grave infuses the soul of his dying Queen into the blood of a human artisan, Lord Ante Lysis. Her soul passes through Ante's blood into his offspring, thus the Lysis bloodline carries the diseased Queen's soul as the Doctor perfects the necromancy needed to resurrect her. But the last descendant of Ante is determined quench the Queen's soul, and journeys to the Underworld to do so... Book Review   First off, let me start by saying that this book is not for the feint of heart.  If you do not like macabre stories, then you will want to steer clear of this one. On that note, I loved this book.  It has been ages since I have read a good horror/fantasy book.  This one is definitely that.  It will take you to places that you wish you didn’t go.  It will cause you to squirm with uneasiness.  It will make you want to lock your doors tigh

The Promised Land

Image
Book Description   It’s 1966, just two years after President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law, and twelve-year-old Joy Bradford’s life is changing dramatically. Born and raised in the white suburbs of Connecticut, Joy is moving to Willets Point, Florida to live with her mother Jessica because her parents are divorcing. Hoping it really is the Promised Land that her mother describes, she joins in Jessica’s enthusiasm only to find out how horribly wrong that vision is. Unfortunately for Joy, the move does nothing to change her mother’s emotional and mental instability, resulting in a continuation of the physical and verbal abuse she is all too used to receiving. Her new school is years behind her old one, the kids dress and act differently, and on just the second day, Joy has a run-in with her geography teacher. Things are going from bad to worse until Clay Dooley, a mixed-race boy from that same geography class, offers his friendship. The two become clo

Guest Post: Reading with, Not to, Your Child

Reading with, Not to, Your Child By Thomas Weck Reading a book to your child is a great way to help your child learn. Sometimes, though, simply reading the words on the page may not be stimulating enough. Some of the time your child might be perfectly content to sit and listen; on other days, he may not be able to keep one foot still! Do not fret. Your child can get his learning and keep his energy at a high level, too! The trick is to read with your child. Start with the old standby--reading. Once the story has begun to unfold, ask your child some questions before moving onto the next page. Use questions that will encourage interaction. For example: * Point to some of the pictures on the page and see if your child can describe what the illustrations show. Is the main character revealed on the first page? Can you tell where the story takes place? Is it daytime or nighttime as the story begins? Do you think it will be the same at the end of the story? (And no peeking ahead is
